May/June Music Roundup – Paris

May was a very good month – musically speaking- in Paris, even if the same can’t be said for the weather!  So much to hear, all genres, I didn’t even get to half of what I would have liked to have seen.  Do you see something in this list that you might have gone to – if only you’d been in Paris and had known in advance?

My May list – the rarely mounted La Gioconda at the Opera Bastille, Low (from Duluth Minnesota with a strong French following – who knew) at a small club,  Avishai Cohen (an Israeli jazz bass player, this time with a group – mostly strings – that was almost orchestral), followed by the new film by the Coen brothers straight from the Cannes Film Festival, Inside Llewyn Davis (I know, it’s film but a film about a musician!  General release is scheduled for late fall.) and the LA Dance Project (Benjamin Millepied’s American troupe in Paris before he takes over as head of the Paris Opera Ballet a year from now – you may know him as the choreographer for the movie Black Swan and now Natalie Portman’s husband).  And I would have liked to have seen Emmylou Harris, Baptiste Trotignon ( a wonderful young pianist), Mina Agossi (a young jazz singer that one magazine described as being somewhere between Jimi Hendrix and Björk), the Wu Tang Clan, Flaming Lips and the Paris Opera Ballet in their Béjart, Nijinsk, Robbins and Cherkaoui program (almost impossible to get tickets to this)!

June is equally rich and diverse, starting out with Handel’s Allesandro (staging by Lucinda Childs which mixed modern and period – outstanding!)  in the Royal Theater at the Chateau at Versailles (easily accessible by public transportation), Sixto Rodriguez (his story is the subject of the documentary Sugar Man) and John Adam’s ‘I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky’.  I’ve already missed a young Cuban singer Ylian Canizares and won’t have time to hear the Rotterdam Philharmonic with Yannick Nézet-Séguin either.  Nor new dance piece (In the Mind of Igor) choreographed by Akram Khan, based on Stravinsky’s scandalous (at the time) Sacred Spring (at the Art Deco gem of  the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées where the original work premiered in 1913).

There just aren’t enough hours in the month!  So much to see, so little time 🙂
