Paris has music for all tastes

January 11th, 2016

Paris has something to offer to all music lovers, regardless of their preferred genre. My friends know that my musical tastes are rather broad and this past fall’s programming was a treasure trove!  To illustrate – during a 3-week period in October I managed to hear:  the Paris Philharmonic doing a Bartok program to satisfy orchestral desires, Schoenberg’s Moses and Aron (a new production at the Opéra Bastille) and Bluebeard’s Castle paired with The Human Voice (Bartok and Poulenc respectively, also new productions this year at the Opéra Garner) to satisfy opera needs, Patti Smith at the Olympia and Apocalyptica (a Finish metal cello band!) at the Zenith for rock/heavy metal, Melody Gardot for jazz and Coeur de Pirate for French pop (though as a French Canadian she also sings in English), both at the Olympia.  And then there was Stacey Kent at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, a new production of The Damnation of Faust at Opera Bastille and, for musical theater, a production of Singin’ in the Rain at the Théâtre du Châtelet (in English), all before the end of December.  So why not ask me to help you find a concert to attend during your next trip to Paris?

PS – oh, and there’s dance too.  Saw a lovely program by the Paris Opera Ballet (pieces by Millepied, Robbins and Balanchine).
