Monumenta, Grand Palais

May 13th, 2016

Monumenta, organized by the Grand Palais Paris every spring since 2007, gives one selected artist carte blanche for an installation in the Nef of the Grand Palais.  This year’s work by Huang Yong Ping, a Chinese artist living in France, and titled Empires is a comment on globalization, the industrial revolution and, of course, empires.  Comprised of 305 shipping containers, a giant snake and an enormous replica of Napoleon’s famous hat, it’s impressive and thought provoking.  And it’s always wonderful to visit the Nef, with all its steel and glass and art nouveau details (which is only open during special events and exhibits)!  Through June 18th.
